2nd Lit Circle Post for Hello America

Page 56 Paragraph 4

Quote 1:
''You don't know? They are our cousins. First cousins of to Mordecai and me. Their families came here many years ago, years before the First World War.'' - Uncle Abish

Significance:
I believe this quote is significant to question number one. The reason why I chose this quote was because it explained why did Elli came to America. Elli came to America because there were relatives there. Also it explains one of the main reasons why many immigrants came to America.

Personal Connection:
I connect to this quote because I have some immigrants in my family and they came to America for a reason as well. One of the reasons was not because of family ties, but because of their country's bad economy and unreasonable government system.

Question:
If you have immigrants in your family, what was the reason(s) why they came to America?

Quote 2:
''Despite my initial disappointment, I find myself anticipating the challenge of my new job with a growing sense of adventure. I wake up bright and early, and, armed with a sandwich and an ample supply of good advice provided by my ''two mothers,'' I reach the Kings Highway train station even before 7:00 a.m.'' -Elli

Significants:
In my opinion this quote relates to question number 5. The reason why I think this this quote is significant is because it explains one of Elli's challenges. The hardship she endures was that she had to work for long hours at her new job.

Personal Connection:
A connection to this quote would be that when my grandmother arrived to America she had only one leg, because she was in a car accident. In addition, she had to work for long hours as a maid.

Question:
If you have any immigrants in your family, what hardships did they endured?
